Gravel to Greatness
We transformed the old compound into a top-quality 3G football pitch – all-weather, low-maintenance, and built to last. A total upgrade that’s already making a huge difference to daily school life.

This full-scale playground transformation was carried out for a primary school in South Yorkshire, turning a dusty compound area into a state-of-the-art 3G artificial grass football pitch, complete with drainage, safety surfacing, floodlighting, and secure fencing. The project was delivered start-to-finish by our team, creating a professional, all-weather sports facility designed for years of school use.
The job began with removal of the existing compound surface, followed by ground preparation. We excavated the area, created drainage channels, and installed a system of perforated pipes leading to a large attenuation tank, ensuring effective water management and long-term performance of the pitch in all weather conditions.
Once drainage was in place, we installed a weed-proof membrane, followed by a thick layer of MOT Type 3 stone, which was mechanically compacted and levelled using rollers. Over this, we laid permeable tarmac across the full area to form a strong, flat sub-base – an essential foundation for the surfacing layers to follow.
Next, we installed a shockpad layer for added safety – an ideal solution for primary school environments where extra protection against trips and falls is essential. On top of this, we laid 50mm 3G artificial grass, a professional-grade football surface used across the UK.
To complete the system, we installed infill materials, spreading a combination of silica sand and rubber crumb throughout the turf. This gives the surface proper weight, support, and playability, helping mimic the feel of natural grass while ensuring long-term durability. We also cut in full football pitch line markings to regulation size, ready for daily use by students.
Around the edge of the pitch, we added a blue artificial grass ‘run-off’ zone using a lower-pile turf, helping visually separate the playing area while improving safety. This attention to detail helps prevent trips and gives the pitch a polished, finished look.
To maximise usage year-round, we fitted floodlighting around the pitch, allowing the space to be used during shorter winter days or after-school clubs. Finally, we installed green mesh MUGA-style fencing to keep the pitch secure and contained, giving staff peace of mind and helping maintain the area.
This project was a complete design-and-build service from start to finish. We handled every aspect – from excavation and drainage to surfacing, lighting, and fencing. The result? A durable, low-maintenance, professional-grade 3G football pitch perfect for primary school use.
